We will also go to Mae Sai, the most northern town on the Thai-Myanmar border, and on to the Golden Triangle area where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar converge.     Depart from the hotel for Doi Mae Salong and visit a Kuomintang (KMT) Yunannese Chinese settlement. En route we will stop at the villages of former Yao and Akha opium planters. Afterwards, we will continue to Mae Sai on the Myanmar border where you can enjoy shopping and see the Burmese jade, which was used to create the famous Emerald Buddha statue. After lunch, we will proceed to the famous Golden Triangle where three countries converge. We will visit the Hall of Opium, a very interesting permanent exhibition about the legends and history of the opium trade. Before returning to our hotel, we will visit the old temples of Chiang Saen.

    We drive for one hour to Doi Tung Mountain, where the royal project of HRH the late Princess Mother is situated. Her vision and determined efforts helped resolve several troubling drug-related issues for the nearby tribal villages. The project combines both northern Thai and Swiss flower garden themes which surround her winter villa. We will then drive to the northern town of Mae Sai on the Myanmar border. After lunch, we will have time for shopping and a short visit to the famous Burmese jade working center. In the afternoon, our stops will include the Golden Triangle, The Hall of Opium and ancient city of Chiang Saen.

    We will leave the hotel by van and visit the temple of the Emerald Buddha in Chiang Rai city. Afterwards, we will take an hour long boat trip to a Karen village where the largest elephant camp in the province is located. An hour-long elephant ride across rice-fields and mountains presents unparalleled views normally not experienced in vehicular travel. We will go to Yao, Akha and Lahu tribal villages and visit a nearby beautiful waterfall afterwards, take a local minibus back to our hotel.

    Long Neck (Padong), Yao, Akha and Karen villages with an hour-long elephant ride

    This tour visits some of the more fascinating tribes in the northern area, including the Yao, Lahu, and Akha, as well as the Padong. The latter are known as the “long neck” tribe due to their practice (beginning at the age of five) of fitting rings round the necks of their women folk, adding rings every three or four years until their neck is stretched, thus protecting them from tiger attacks. We will have lunch in a Chiang Rai restaurant. Afterwards, we will drive to the largest elephant camp in the area. These animals were once used exclusively for logging, but since logging was made illegal in 1989, now are used only in tourism. An hour-long elephant ride across rice fields and mountains presents unparalleled views normally not experienced in vehicular travel.

    Doi Mae Salong, Long-Neck tribe

    Doi Mae Salong is a settlement on top of a high mountain peak, made by the Chinese Kuomintung (KMT) who fled China after Mao Tse Tung took over the mainland in 1949. The village became well–known for tea growing. We continue to visit Baan Yapa village where three tribes, Akha, Lahu and Long–Necked Karen all live together. Then we return to the hotel.
